Application

Applications are invited from Ph.D. students at any time after joining the lab of an MPath Trainer, regardless of graduate program. Our intent is to solicit applications annually from rising second through fifth-year students for one or two-year awards (second year contingent on satisfactory progress, review by the Steering Committee, and availability of funds). Please note that NIH restricts traineeships to citizens and permanent residents of the United States. Trainees will typically be selected in Summer, for awards effective August 1. Questions regarding the application process should be directed to the MPath Director, Jon Woods (jpwoods@wisc.edu, 420 SMI). The application will consist of the student's Graduate School application file including:

  • Personal statement
  • Undergraduate transcripts
  • GRE scores
  • Minimum of three letters of recommendation

and the following:

  • Transcript of coursework and grades since enrolling at the UW
  • Letter of recommendation and plans for research support including
current and pending grant information from the thesis advisor
  • Letter of recommendation from another faculty member
  • Personal statement describing the applicant’s research and career plans.

The MPath Steering Committee will evaluate applications and award traineeships based upon:

  • The quality of all of the above components.
  • The strength of the applicant’s background.
  • The applicant's future potential for a biomedical research career in microbial pathogenesis and host responses.
  • The advisor's program participation and commitment for supporting the research training of the applicant.

Unsuccessful applicants will be encouraged to participate in all aspects of the training program and follow program guidelines as unfunded trainees. They may be eligible to reapply in subsequent years as long as they are making normal progress toward a Ph.D. degree, depending upon their qualifications and how competitive a particular pool of applicants is in a given year.
