The program is designed to provide trainees with a shared sense of identity and a cohesive focus of instruction and activities in microbial pathogenesis and host responses. Requirements are not predicted to delay progress in or increase the duration of Ph.D. training, as specified for each requirement below. Trainees or trainers may appeal for exceptions to particular requirements, which will be considered on an individual basis by the Steering Committee.
- Thesis advisor, thesis committee composition, annual thesis committee meetings and reports
The thesis advisor and at least two other members of the thesis committee must be MPath Trainers. The thesis committee must convene at least annually and provide the Steering Committee with a written report of progress, including details on fulfillment of the requirements of the MPath training program.
- Didactic courses
The trainee must complete at least three of the following six courses: Bact 640, MMI 720, MMI 740, MMI 750, MMI 773, MMI 790. These courses lie in three two-course "tracks." A trainee may complete two courses in one track and one in another, or may complete one course in each track.

- Student Seminar Series
Participation including course enrollment and research presentations in the student seminar series designed for the trainee's graduate program (e.g. MMI 901/Bact 731 for MDTP).
- Journal Club in Microbial Pathogenesis & Host Responses
Participation including enrollment and presentations in MMI 900: Journal Club in Microbial Pathogenesis & Host Responses, co-directed by Drs. Dillard and Knoll.
- MPHRG Participation
Attendance and annual presentation of a seminar at the regular monthly meetings of the Microbial Pathogenesis & Host Responses Group.
- Instruction in the Responsible Conduct of Research
The trainee must complete one of the following three courses concerning responsible conduct of research:
- Oncology 675 Appropriate Conduct and Effective Communication of Science
- Chem 901 Seminar in Scientific Ethics
- Vet Med short course Good Practices in Science: Research Ethics and Survival Skills
- Human Oncology 721 The Conduct of Science
- Nursing 802 Ethics and the Responsible Conduct of Research
