Medical Microbiology and Immunology

Sample Timeline

First Year

  • Trainee is supported by graduate program then advisor funds or individual fellowship.
  • At least 3 research lab rotations; join lab of an MPath Trainer as thesis research lab between end of Fall semester (~ December 15) and February 15.
  • 2 didactic courses each semester:
    • Fall: MMI 740 Mechanisms of Microbial Pathogenesis and Bact 607 Advanced Microbial Genetics
    • Spring: MMI 773 Eukaryotic Microbial Pathogenesis and Path 750 Cellular & Molecular Biology/Pathology.
  • Attend student seminar course (MMI 901/Bact 731).
  • Enroll in MMI 900 Journal Club in Microbial Pathogenesis & Host Responses.
  • Attend MPHRG meetings and participate in MPHRG activities.
  • Assemble thesis committee.
  • Prepare initial research and coursework plans in consultation with thesis advisor.
  • Hold 1st thesis committee meeting.
  • Apply or be nominated for proposed MPath support; receive traineeship award effective July 1.

Second Year

  • First year of training grant support.
  • Continue bench research in trainer/thesis advisor’s lab.
  • 2 didactic courses each semester
    • Fall: MMI 720 Topics in Immunology and Biochem 601 Protein and Enzyme Structure and Function
    • Spring: MMI 790 Immunology of Infectious Disease and Bact 726 Gene Regulation in Prokaryotes.
  • Attend student seminar course (MMI 901/Bact 731).
  • Enroll in MMI 900 Journal Club in Microbial Pathogenesis & Host Responses.
  • Enroll in one-credit Responsible Conduct of Research course.
    • Chem 901, Seminar in Scientific Ethics (or Oncology 675, Advanced or Special Topics in Cancer Research: Appropriate Conduct and Effective Communication of Science).
  • Attend MPHRG meetings and participate in MPHRG activities.

Third Year

  • Second year of training grant support, provided a second year is awarded.
  • Continue bench research in trainer/thesis advisor’s lab.
  • Take and pass Preliminary Examination and become Dissertator in Fall semester.
  • Attend student seminar course (MMI 901/Bact 731); give first research presentation in this course.
  • Enroll in MMI 900 Journal Club in Microbial Pathogenesis & Host Responses.
  • Attend MPHRG meetings and participate in MPHRG activities.

Fourth Year

  • Continue bench research in trainer/thesis advisor’s lab.
  • Attend student seminar course (MMI 901/Bact 731); give second research presentation in this course.
  • Enroll in MMI 900 Journal Club in Microbial Pathogenesis & Host Responses.
  • Attend MPHRG meetings and participate in MPHRG activities.

Fifth and Possibly Sixth Year

  • Supported by advisor funds or individual fellowship.
  • Continue bench research in trainer/thesis advisor’s lab.
  • Attend student seminar course (MMI 901/Bact 731); give research presentation in this course.
  • Enroll in MMI 900 Journal Club in Microbial Pathogenesis & Host Responses.
  • Attend MPHRG meetings and participate in MPHRG activities.
  • Write, present, and defend thesis.
  • Graduate and move on to postdoctoral fellowship.

Note: Seminar, journal club, and research credit courses do not count toward major or minor. Responsible Conduct of Research course can count toward major or minor.

Microbial Pathogenesis & Host Responses Training Program

  • This student has taken 4 courses from the designated list of 6 (3 required): MMI 720, MMI 740, MMI 773, MMI 790.
  • S/he has taken both courses in each of the Pathogenesis (MMI 740, MMI 773) and Immunology (MMI 720, MMI 790) tracks.
  • S/he has also taken a Responsible Conduct of Research course.
  • Other training program requirements such as student seminar, journal club, and MPHRG participation have also been fulfilled.
